This past Sunday, I went back to college. Being part of a sorority, you have a “big sister” and a “little sister.” This tradition is as old as the sorority and continues every year. It’s similar to having a mentor or a person to turn to in the sorority.
This past Sunday, I went back with my sorority family- the “Legacy Family” to meet the newest addition- my little little little little little (yes, my little to the 5th) sister. I watched this girl go through the same emotions- nervousness, surprise, excitement as I went through years ago. As a new member, you’re so excited to get your big. It’s one of the best moments during sorority life. As an alumni, it’s amazing to watch the same traditions be passed down and continued.
When sitting there, I reflected on the process of getting my big and then my little. Looking back, I never realize that night would led me to my best friends. Bernadette and Marissa, my big and little respectively, are a huge part of my life and can’t imagine not having them as friends. This bond that formed is very unique. What are the chances that the girl you pick as your potential big and little end up being so close to you years later? That years after going to Friendly’s late night to celebrate, you call them on a daily or weekly basis? You travel with them, workout with them, cry with them, borrow clothes, laugh hard, write long emails, fix resumes, cheer them on with law school…basically everything you’d do for a best friend.
Bernadette, me and Marissa- my big & little, best friends
Our tradition (and most of the sorority) is to bring the newest member out for dinner at Friendly’s. It was great to catch up with alumni (there’s six of us that are local) and the current sisters and learn more about the newest member, Ashley. We exchanged stories about the past and learned how the university, Greek Life and college is now.
The “legacy” family has grown so much! Hopefully, years from now, these girls are lucky as I am- having best friends who are their big and little.
